I recently had an intriguing discussion with Perplexity where I made the intuitive connection that China’s humanoid AI sports bots might serve as a cover for testing real-time decision-making and athletic skills for future battlefield scenarios. This may provide them an edge in the ongoing, unspoken AI cold war between the US and China that is characterized by the development and weaponization of ever-advancing AI systems, which we can see are now beginning to take physical form.
Perplexity confirmed my suspicions (to an extent) and I felt it was a clever rouse. The irony, however, is that they’re developing these technologies in the name of safety. Their public pitch is that they’re testing these technologies to ensure safe human/AI interactions in the future.
Framing a false initiative for disguised intentions as such is, of course, not unique to China; however, at least they’re having some fun competition in the process. Unlike the US, which has a history of falsely framing another nation as a hostile threat when in reality they likely only threaten US business interests.
Continue to spread awareness my fellow devs. Keep the torch of truth bright and burning, and we may yet have an impact on whether the AI age will be mankind’s greatest achievement or worst nightmare.
